The Power of Perspective in Personal Finances

August 07, 2025

There’s a story I love (part parable, part punchline) that captures why perspective is so important with personal finances.

A father had two sons: one a pessimist, the other an optimist. For their birthdays, he conducted an experiment. To the pessimist, he gave a room full of the most incredible toys imaginable. To the optimist, he gave a large pile of horse manure.

The reactions? Predictable… or maybe not.

The pessimist sat among the toys, overwhelmed and tearful: “I don’t have the manuals… the batteries… what if they break?” Meanwhile, the optimist was joyfully digging through the manure. When asked why, he said, “With all this poop, there’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”

It’s a funny, yet powerful tale. Because it underscores a truth that I see every day: our financial reality is shaped not just by numbers, but by mindset.

You can have a solid income, a robust retirement account, even a growing investment portfolio, and still feel anxious, stuck, or defeated. Why? Because your perception tells you that it’s not enough. Your mindset of scarcity tells you that there’s always someone doing better. That you’re behind.

On the flip side, I’ve met people with debt, life transitions, or limited resources who are full of energy and optimism. They focus on what’s possible, not what’s lacking. And guess what? Their mindset of abundance leads to progress.

Thoughts drive actions. Actions drive results.

If you’re telling yourself, “I’ll never get ahead,” then every budget looks like a restriction. Every dollar saved feels like a drop in the bucket. But if you shift your perspective to “What can I make of this situation?,” you create space for creativity, motivation, and forward momentum.

Now, this isn’t about magical thinking. I won’t tell you to close your eyes, wish hard, and expect your financial stress to disappear. But reframing your financial mindset is the first step toward changing your financial story.

And the best part? You don’t have to dig through the muck alone.

Working with a personal financial planner can help you make sense of the mess, reframe your outlook, and create a plan that turns manure into momentum.

Because sometimes, all it takes is someone to remind you there is a pony in there somewhere. If I can be that helpful reminder, reach out to me at 914-288-8862 or gary_blum@strategiesforwealth.com.
